The letter is being sent, in the spirit of goodwill, to address some of the controversial remarks made by Pope Benedict XVI during his lecture at the University of Regensburg in Germany on 12 September 2006. The letter tackles the main issues raised by the Pope in his discussion of a debate between the medieval Emperor Manuel II Paleologus and an 'educated Persian' such as compulsion in religion, reason and faith, forced conversion, the understanding of 'Jihad' or 'Holy War,' and the relationship between Christianity and Islam. The Muslim signatories accept the Pope's personal expression of sorrow and assurance that the controversial quote did not reflect his personal opinion. At the same time, the letter represents an attempt to engage with the Papacy on theological grounds in order to tackle wide ranging misconceptions about Islam in the Western world. Christianity and Islam make up more than half of humankind in a rapidly interconnected world, the letter states, and it is imperative that both sides share a responsibility for peace to move the debate away from the anger of the streets toward a frank and sincere dialogue of hearts and minds that furthers mutual understanding and respect between the two religious traditions. The endorsement of the edicts was part of a general statement emanating from the International Islamic Conference convened by His Majesty King Abdullah in the Jordanian capital, Amman. In a statement issued by the Royal Hashemite Court, His Majesty stressed Jordan's solidarity with the British people and his condemnation of such criminal acts that left several fatalities and injuries. The King underlined the need for all to join efforts to fight all forms of terrorism and the forces that support and stand behind it. His Majesty said that our true Islamic religion condemns the killing of innocents and rejects all forms of violence and terrorism, stressing that Islamic values promote tolerance and justice and renounce violence. The King extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wished the wounded a speedy recovery. Amman Message
“9 November 2004, His Majesty King Abdullah II joined worshippers at Al Hashemiyeen Mosque in a religious ceremony to mark Laylat Al Qadr, the night on which the Holy Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Mohammad. In His Majesty's presence, Chief Islamic Justice Sheikh Izz-Eddine Al-Khatib Al-Tamimi delivered the “Amman Message” in defence of Islam as a faith of moderation and tolerance that rejects extremism and terrorism and believes in dialogue.” Laylat al-Qadr is the holiest night of the fasting month of the Ramadan that marks the day when the Holy Book, the Quran was revealed by God to Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him nearly 1,400 years ago. King Abdullah and the prayers at the mosque listened to a speech delivered by the King's advisor for Religious affairs and Chief Justice Sheikh Izz-Eddine Al Khateeb Al Tamimi in which he urged Muslims worldwide to reject religious extremism saying some who claim to be followers of Islam are committing " criminal acts" in its name. In his speech dubbed "Amman Message" , Tamimi urged Muslims to adhere to Islam's message of tolerance, Tamimi said "Some who attack Islam imagine it as their enemy, but it is not their enemy." "Others, who claim to belong to Islam, have done gruesome and criminal acts in its name," said Tamimi, who is also Chairman of the National Fatwa Council. "We are aware of the dangers and challenges the Islamic Nation is facing at this difficult juncture," Sheikh Tamimi added. The "Amman Message" affirmed that Jordan has been keen on highlighting the true and bright image of Islam and on fending off any attack on Islam. Islam is a faith of ethics that seeks goodness for all people and therefore defending Islam can only be through ethical means, Tamimi noted. "According to the Islamic religion an end does not justify the means," he said. |
October 2006, Amman, In an unprecedented move, an Open Letter signed by 38 leading Muslim religious scholars and leaders around the world was sent to Pope Benedict XVI on 15 October 2006. The letter, which is the first of its kind in several centuries, was a collaborative effort signed by such prominent figures as the Grand Muftis of Egypt, Russia, Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, Istanbul, Uzbekistan and Oman, as well as leading figures from the Shia community such as Ayatollah Muhammad Ali Taskhiri of Iran. The letter was also signed by HRH Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad bin Talal, the Personal Envoy and Special Advisor to King Abdullah II of Jordan. Western scholars have signed the document, including California scholar, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf Hanson, Professor Seyyed Hossein Nasr of George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and Professor Tim Winter of the University of Cambridge.
Amman, 6/7/2005, - Leading Muslim clerics on Wednesday endorsed religious edicts (fatwas) forbidding the declaration of any Muslim an apostate (takfir) and limiting the issuance of religious edicts to qualified Muslim clerics in the eight schools of Islamic jurisprudence.
